Vegetarian Chana Masala

I found this awesome recipe in a Canadian Living magazine while sitting at the dentist. And yes…. I did ask before I ripped it out of the magazine.  Since the internet has become so easy when it comes to recipes, there aren’t as many subscribers to cooking magazines anymore. So how would one know to search this up on the internet?! It’d be a shame to miss. I love indian food! And if you like spice and wanna kick it up a notch, just add some red chili peppers! Only takes 30 minutes to make and serves four. (Or three if you really like it)


  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 6 cloves garlic , minced
  • 2 tbsp grated fresh ginger
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp ground coriander
  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp garam masala *
  • 1/2 cup tomato paste
  • 2 tsp packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 cans (19 oz/540 mL each) chickpeas , drained and rinsed
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice

Garam Masala is just a pre-made mixture of 5-12 different Indian spices. Most of these spices are already in the recipe so if you can’t find this is the store don’t fret. It’ll still be good!


1. In saucepan, heat oil over medium-high heat; cook onions, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes.
2. Add garlic and ginger; cook for 1 minute. Stir in chili powder, coriander, cumin and garam masala; cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
3. Stir in 1 cup water, tomato paste, brown sugar, salt and chickpeas, scraping up any browned bits.
4. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until thickened slightly, about 15 minutes. Stir in lemon juice.
